Janelle Payne – Barrister & Mediator

Janelle Payne is a barrister and mediator, using her 20 years as a commercial lawyer to help solve complex, commercial, multiparty and emotionally-charged disputes in or out of court.

Janelle’s experience includes 13 years as a commercial barrister in Brisbane with proficiency in all stages of litigation, from advising on prospects, drafting or settling pleadings, settling expert reports, preparing a case for hearing and cross-examining witnesses.

Janelle has also conducted hundreds of commercial and industrial relations mediations in her recent role as a court Registrar.

She is known for her persuasive written submissions and sound legal argument.  She has appeared in all State and Commonwealth Courts and Tribunals such as Supreme Court of Queensland, District Court of Queensland, Civil and Administrative Tribunal, Queensland Industrial Relations Tribunal, Administrative Appeals Tribunal, Federal Court, Federal Circuit Court and the High Court and is adept at tackling the most challenging commercial, multi-party and emotionally charged disputes.

At the Advanced Mediation Workshop at Harvard Law School (Program on Negotiation: Executive education, Cambridge, June 2017),  Janelle enhanced her toolkit in tackling the most challenging commercial, multiparty and emotionally-charged disputes. She also attended the 2nd International ADR Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.

In 2023, Janelle was appointed an expert assessor at the International Bar Association Mediation and Negotiation Competition held in Vienna.

Janelle is available to assist parties in resolving their disputes through mediation, arbitration. or court processes.  Janelle conducts mediations in person in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast and via online platforms including Teams and Zoom.  She also travels regionally, interstate (including Sydney and Melbourne) and internationally. To give certainty in the uncertain world of litigation, she offers an all-inclusive fixed fee, including reading time and pre-mediation sessions.

She uses the mediation rooms of Clark & Associates on the Sunshine Coast and frequently mediates at the rooms of Queensland Law Society. Solicitors are also welcome to arrange their own rooms.  A commercial boardroom facility can also be provided for your conflict resolution meeting.
